This short video from Microsoft demonstrates how to record in PowerPoint.

Instructions: Recording with PowerPoint

Recording with PowerPoint

You can record your presentation over your slides using the PowerPoint desktop application (the online version won't work for this!). Once you've finished your slide presentation, you can record a voice-over and include a video of you speaking.

Getting Started

To start your recording, go to the Slide Show tab and select Record Slide Show.

The PowerPoint toolbar menu. A red box highlights the Record Slide Show button.

You will then be brought to the recording screen where you can record your voice and webcam view while you progress through the slides.

Recording Page Controls

The recording page controls.

The top-left of the screen includes three buttons for recording your video:

  • Record: Use the circular red Record button to begin recording.
  • Stop: Use the square Stop button to stop recording.
  • Replay: Use the triangular Replay button to play back your recording.

Clear and settings buttons.

The top-right of the screen includes two dropdown menus for managing recordings:

  • Clear: Remove recently recorded videos. Good for clearing up storage space.
  • Settings: Select your microphone and camera sources.

Recording Your Session

  • You can record your session with or without your webcam view. If you do not want to include a recording of yourself, click the camcorder button. This will turn your webcam off.
  • You will see a countdown once you press the red record button. It will then record whatever is on your slide.
  • If you want to pause the recording, you can press the pause button. Press record to start again.
  • If you want to end and save the recording, press the stop button.
  • You can navigate through your slides while recording by pressing the forward and backwards buttons. You can also pause between each slide.
  • If you want to use a laser pointer while you are recording, press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and your mouse key.
  • If you want to check the recording on a slide, press replay.
  • When you are done recording, press stop and exit the recording page.

Finishing Touches

  • You cannot move the webcam view while you are recording, but you can move it once the recording is done.
    • You can drag and resize the webcam view on each individual slide.
  • To export your video, go to File - Export - Create a video.
    • You can select the length of time spent on each slide, OR
    • You can select use recorded times and narrations if you narrated over each slide.
  • Remember to export your video as a MPEG-4 (.mpg4) file.
    • It might take your file a while to export.

Export menu. The Create a Video and Creat Video buttons are highlighted.
