What makes for an effective academic poster?

Poster presentations can make a lasting impact on its audience. Here are some things to keep in mind when constructing yours.

An Effective Poster... An Ineffective Poster...
  • Summarizes your work/research
  • Is a conversation starter
  • Advertises your work
  • Uses visual grammar:
    • Expresses your points in graphical terms
    • Avoids visual chaos - is organized following a visual logic and structure
    • Everything is legible from a distance
  • Attracts a large audience and interest
  • Is poorly organized
  • Objective and main points are hard to find
  • Has poor graphics
  • Has too small text
  • Uses a typeface inappropriate for its subject matter
