PCS Project Sequence Lessons & Activities

Information literacy assignments, lessons, activities and exercises for use in the PCS group project sequence

Notes on HUSB 330

HUSB 330 is the second class on the project sequence, most students will have had Issues in Research previously. This class should focus on building on those initial skills learned in HUSB 305 and prepare students to do their review of literature.

What should they have done in the previous class?

Students should have written a research paper and done basic research in HUSB 305.

Course Objectives

Exercises in this guide support action step #3 for HUSB 330:

Prepare a preliminary literature review using APA style

Exercises and lessons in this guide support many different objectives. Check each exercise for more information.

REQUIRED exercises are marked with an asterisk.

Faculty may also opt to have a librarian-led instruction session in place of some of required activities.  The session content will depend on the curriculum worked out between the librarian and faculty member.

Searching and finding

Reinforcing exercises and lessons to reinforce and expand the breadth and depth of students searching skills.

Using information effectively

Reinforcing lessons and exercises to help students learn to use and present information effectively. Builds on the material covered in HUSB 305.

The goal of these exercises is to support students as they continue with the research process for their main project. Writing Tone has students read papers written in various tones and then allows them to determine which would be the most appropriate for an academic paper. Annotated Bibliography develops students' research, organization, comprehension, analysis, evaluation, bibliographic citation, and writing skills by having them complete a short annotated bibliography. Literature Review eases students into the world of literature reviews, allowing them to read examples and complete an assignment in which they would create one themselves.

Action Research

Pre-search and topic development

Reinforcing and mastery exercises and lessons to build students' ability to create manageble research projects and to think through their information needs and how to fill them.

Students will already have created a question and researched a topic in HUSB 305. The lessons and exercises here are intended to build on that experience.

Evaluating information

Reinforcing lessons and exercises related to applying evaluation criteria (e.g., author's expertise, currency, accuracy, type of publication, etc.) to information and its source. These activities build on the skills students learned in HUSB 305.

Information ethics

Reinforcing lessons and exercises to strengthen students use of and understanding of the ethical and legal use of information.
