Evaluating Web Sites
How can you tell if a web site is trustworthy or not? It's not always easy, but there are things that you can look for that will help you decide.
- Who is the author? Are they qualified to talk about this subject?
- How accurate is the information? You may need to compare what you find with another source to answer this question.
- Who is the audience? This can influence how much detail is included.
- What point of view is being represented? All sites have a bias, but is it obvious or are they trying to hide something?
- How up to date is the site? Older information may no longer be accurate.
- How comprehensive is the page? Some pages may leave out critical information.

- Campus Crime and Security (Postsecondary Institutions)Searchable database (by institution, locality, state, size, etc.) of criminal offenses reported by more than 6,000 postsecondary institutions in the United States and compiled by the Office of Postsecondary Education (U.S. Dept. of Education).
- Consortium for Policy Research in EducationAccess to a variety of reports covering all phases of educational research.
- Data for Sustainable Development GoalsExplore the"Education & Literary" theme or browse by country to find international education statistics.
- Education Data from the Census BureauCheck the Census Bureau statistics related to: Educational Attainment; School Enrollment; Public School System Finances, School Districts, Teaching and Statistics, and Educational Services.
- ICPSR - Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social ResearchICPSR is an international consortium of more than 700 colleges, universities, and research organizations. Hosted by the University of Michigan, it includes data archives, research statistics, and educational activities on various political and social topics.
- Individuals with Disabilites Education Act - Annual Reports to CongressAnnual Reports to Congress on the Implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act including statistics related to Student Characteristics and Programs and Services.
- Massachusetts School and District ProfilesProfiles of Massachusetts schools and school districts (public, charter, special, collaborative, etc.) prepared by the Mass. Dept. of Education.
- Nation's Report CardMore formally know as the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the Nation's Report Card is the "largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our students know." and can do in various subject areas. Explore the data here.
- National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)The primary federal entity collecting education related data. Start here for a wealth information.
- The Schott Foundation - 50 State Black Boys ReportThis site measures gaps in graduation rates, educational progress, and disciplinary action between black male and white male students.
- Thomas B. Fordham InstituteAn education focused think tank promoting educational excellence.
- UIS.Stat.International data on education. This site is useful if you want to compare across countries. This site is more in-depth but less user-friendly than Data for Sustainable Development Goals (see link above). Both sites are part of the same organization.
