With the evolution of rights for LGBTQ+ people in different places in the world, so too has representation in media for this community. Through different periods in time, queer people have expressed themselves through different ways and in the present day, there are many different examples of representation for queer people, especially in films. Recent generations of queer people, specifically Generation Z have grown up with the rapid evolution of technology too and with that brings the evolution of media access too. This study took 12 queer gen Z people and interviewed them in both individual settings and group sessions after watching some examples of film clips with queer representation and asked about their perspectives on feeling represented, censorship, and how public opinion influences these and vice versa. Participant responses did vary, though the majority had similar feelings of how they were represented when it came to their sexual orientation, but not so represented in gender identity with trans or gender non conforming participants. There was also a shared sentiment in individual and group discussions that public opinion can contribute a lot in shaping representation and how censorship contributes to the hiding of queer identities. There was an underlying theme in wanting universality and normalization of LGBTQ+ people’s existence and experiences over wanting more dramatic examples and stories.
