Description:
Introduction: Postural Orthostatic tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia affecting an individual's heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and body temperature regulation. POTS is more common among women than in men. An elevated heart rate and blood pressure can cause a variety of symptoms including fatigue, lightheadedness leading to fainting, an intolerance to exercise, and nausea leading to vomiting. Focused Clinical Question: Does exercise as a treatment reduce symptoms among patients with POTS depending on position of exercise? Search Strategy and Results of Search: PubMed, Rehabilitation Reference Center, Health and Medicine, and Sports Medicine Sources were used. Key Evidence and Results: Key terms searched were POTS, exercise, symptoms, blood pressure and heart rate. Application / Implications: Exercise helps improve cardiovascular function, increasing blood volume and strengthens the heart. The impacts of exercise can improve exercise tolerance and reduce symptoms for individuals suffering from POTS. Supine exercise positions are more effective in reducing symptoms and are suitable for physical rehabilitation in POTS. Patients with POTS will be positively impacted by understanding how to reduce symptoms and increase their quality of life. Providers can create an appropriate exercise schedule and routine with their patients to align with patient needs. Exercise will allow athletes and individuals with POTS to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Word Count: 211
