Description:
Introduction: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PTSD, is a mental health disorder people can experience from highly stressful or traumatic events. Some symptoms of PTSD can be anxiety, avoidance of certain situations, and experience of flashbacks of the injury. Some treatment options athletes can have are getting a therapist and getting medications for anxiety or depression. Sometimes, even getting back into their sport with the return to play is all the athlete needs. This can happen from witnessing an event or being part of an event. When athletes suffer an injury in a game or during practice, they experience pain, swelling, and stress that can trigger a mental disorder that can be harmful to a person's mental health. Looking into the impact of early assessment and interventions could be beneficial in mitigating the long-term consequences of PTSD.
Focused Clinical Question: Does post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from an injury affect the performance of athletes?
Search Strategy and Results of Search: Databases used for this study include CINAHL, MEDLINE Complete, PubMed, and SPORT Discus. Key search terms included PTSD, athletes, injury, trauma, and performance.
Key Evidence and Results: Sports injuries can cause post-traumatic stress disorder in athletes. Athletic trainers and healthcare professionals must provide mental health support for athletes. Adding psychological care to an athlete's rehabilitation before returning the athlete to play can mitigate the reoccurrence of symptoms.
Application/Implication: Athletic trainers can screen athletes for PTSD and send athletes who may need a therapist, who athletes can go to for mental health aid. These professionals can help athletes gain confidence and improve their performance. Players, athletic trainers, coaches, and parents would all benefit from safer and more complete recoveries for athletes who have PTSD from injury.
