The National Football League (NFL) has been at the center of discussions on social justice for a long time now, particularly regarding racial inequality, police brutality, and players' rights to protest (Bryant, 2020). This issue gained national attention in 2016 when Colin Kaepernick and other players knelt during the national anthem to protest systemic racism. While the NFL has since launched initiatives like the Inspire Change program and pledged financial support for social justice causes, critics argue that these efforts are often performative and fail to address the root issues of discrimination within the league and society at large (Belson, 2020). This project examines the NFL’s role in promoting social justice, with a particular focus on coaching leadership. We Analyze the league’s past actions, current policies, and persistent shortcomings—especially the ongoing lack of Black head coaches, despite the league’s majority-Black player population (Lapchick, 2023). The underrepresentation of Black coaches highlights deeper systemic barriers within hiring and promotion practices. The project also explores how the league has inconsistently supported player and coach-led activism, and its historical reluctance to confront institutional racism within its leadership ranks. Our proposed solution emphasizes structural reform within the NFL, including stronger diversity hiring policies, increased player-led decision-making in social justice initiatives, and a commitment to long-term partnerships with grassroots organizations. By making these changes, the NFL can shift from symbolic gestures to substantive action, setting a powerful example for other major sports leagues. Addressing these issues is crucial not only for the league’s credibility but also for fostering real societal change. Our approach is innovative because it prioritizes accountability, transparency, and player empowerment, ensuring that social justice remains more than just a marketing strategy for the NFL. To make sure that the league is being fair for interviews, teams should have experienced NFL HR representatives to sit in on interviews. They would help to determine if everything is done by the book to ensure that all candidates are given a fair shot. The league shall also hold all teams accountable by enforcing the rules, by handing out penalties, fines, and even loss of future draft picks. These steps are essential to be more consistent, honest, and fair during the hiring process throughout the league.
