This multimedia presentation on a study-abroad program in Buenos Aires, Argentina reflects on society, the arts, and language. The semester combined academic coursework with experiential learning, political site visits, and homestays with local families. Political discussions and visits to key institutions provided insight into the country’s complex political history and current challenges. Interactions with diverse communities highlighted issues of class, race, and urban development, enriching understanding of the country’s social fabric. The cosmopolitan city embraced a varied immigrant population based as an extension of the country’s historical origins. The cultural and social phenomena of both popular and niche music lifted national identity as well as historical memory, and culinary experiences revealed a lifestyle with serious implications for health and family dynamics. The study also analyzes a specific dialect of Spanish that portrayed a more organic evolution of language in contrast to enforced cultural influences by political and economic means. All the locals and foreigners in Buenos Aires remained true to the proud “porteño” social structure which lays out the day-to-day routine and the open mindedness that makes it truly unique from the rest of South America.
