Dr. VanderBeck came to Springfield College in 1946 after having served as a chaplain in the Navy during World War II. Over the years he became well loved by students and served as class advisor to the Classes of 1950 and 1965. In 1967 students requested him to speak at the Baccalaureate. He held position of college chaplain, was a member of the National Association of College and University Chaplains and was at one time, Director of Student Activities.  For many years he taught first- and second-year students courses on New and Old Testament bible studies. An ordained minister of the United Presbyterian Church, he retired in 1976 and died in 1994.
