Summary: During the 1880s American culture became increasingly fascinated with sports. “Sport on the Brain” – Puck’s phrenological chart for the season of 1887 – illuminates how the sports craze was on America’s mind. Springfield College is the ‘Birthplace of Basketball” but also has deep roots in the evolution of gymnastics (Judd is widely considered the “father of modern gymnastics”). It is also the place where Volleyball was developed. Besides the sports that have deep connections to Springfield College – Basketball, Gymnastics, and Volleyball – there are a wide variety of materials on specific sports in the Rare Book Collection.
