Databases for Researching Communications/Sports Journalism
Databases are a great places to find scholarly journal articles - including those that are peer-reviewed - on different topics. Here are a few databases that specialize in journalism, communications, media, sports and related subjects.
- Communication and Mass Media Complete - Old Interface
Provides information about language, mass media, communication, and advertising with many articles available full-text.
- Academic Search Complete - Old Interface
A very large general academic database covering a broad range of topics. It includes a mix of magazine and journal articles. Many items are full text.
- JSTOR
Full text of language and literature journals, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as a general ebook collection.
- SPORTDiscus - Old Interface
Contains information on all aspects of sports, physical education, health, etc.
- Google Scholar
Use this link to Google Scholar instead of going to Google Scholar directly. This will allow you to quickly search huge numbers of academic citations AND access or request them through Library Services.

Semantic Scholar is a free, AI-powered academic search engine with more than 200 million papers covering all disciplines.
Newspaper Databases
In addition to databases containing scholarly articles about journalism, communications, and mass media, the library also has access to a number of databases providing current and historical access to a variety of newspaper articles.
- New York Times Online - Account Registration
Use this link to register your New York Times account! You must register with your Springfield College email address. You must renew your account every 4 years to maintain access.

U.S. Major Dailies provides access to the five most respected U.S. national and regional newspapers: The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the Wall Street Journal.

The Wall Street Journal is an American business-focused, international daily newspaper. Full text from 1984-present.
- Springfield Republican and Western Massachusetts Newspapers
Online access to the Republican and other Western Massachusetts newspapers including: Advocate (North Adams), Amherst Bulletin, Berkshire Eagle, Daily Hampshire Gazette, North Adams Transcript, Recorder (Greenfield), Springfield Advocate, Springfield Examiner, and Valley Advocate.
