There are a number of projects on the Internet that are beginning to offer online access to the full text of many classic and modern literary titles. The websites listed below are examples of some of the major online text resources.

Project GutenbergOne of the original projects to produce and provide access to electronic texts. The original idea for Project Gutenberg dates back to 1971. Nearly 2,000 items are no part of this collection.

Representative Poetry OnlineA searchable index of about 1,650 English poems by about 260 poets from the early medieval period to the beginning of the twentieth century.

African American Women Writers of the 19th CenturyPrepared by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, this collection makes available several dozen works of 19th-century African American women's literature. Included are essays, fiction, journals, poetry, autobiographical narratives, etc.

The Literature NetworkA searchable online database featuring 3500 books and 4400 short stories and poems by 260 authors. Also contains a quotations database and quiz system.

Folklore and Mythology Electronic TextsLinks to approximately 800 original texts (either directly to full text or to collections of texts). There is no search feature. Individual items are listed alphabetically, usually by title and occasionally by author.

The Online Books PageThis site is edited and copyrighted by John Mark Ockerbloom. It is a directory of over 8,000 titles available as full text from a variety of sources on the Web. It can be searched by author, title, and by subjects. Links to related sites.
