The consequences of a dysfunctional father-child relationship
The consequences of a dysfunctional father-child relationship

Day and Time:
Wednesday: 10:00-10:50am
Description:
Examining the idea of “Father-son” relationships in August Wilson’s “Fences” this play suggests how the absence of a stable father figure can adversely affect the various dimensions of a son's identity. In Wilson's novel, Troy employs a unique set of parenting skills that include a combination of harsh discipline, the inability to express affection, the disapproval of Lyons' music and lifestyle, and the discouragement of Corey's football aspirations. To demonstrate this trickle-down effect, I will begin by discussing Troy's past relationship with his own father in order to show the audience how it has damaged his ability to parent Troy and Corey. Following this, I will ultimately concentrate on the impact of his actions on Corey and Lyons, which may indicate that this will not only affect their future years as parents, but as members of society. In conclusion, my essay will focus on father-son relationships and employ specific evidence from the narrative "Fences" and other texts such as “Death of a Salesman” to demonstrate how a negative father-son connection can yield everlasting consequences on an individual. In addition, I will look at different parent characters in famous writings and plays to better comprehend this inquiry and see what types of patterns emerge and if there are any commonalities.
