Role of Women Used as Symbol of Strength in Wilson's play Fences

Description:
My Essay argues that August Willson used the role of Women in his play Fences as a symbol of unrecognized strength and resilience that should be seen more with women in the world today. In the play Fences, Rose decides to stay and help raise Raynell with Troy, even though the baby is not hers. Putting her own feelings aside and making sure that child has a good parent is something that shows an unbelievable amount of strength, but is not widely noticed throughout readers. I begin by explaining Rose's role throughout the entire play, and how she symbolizes strength throughout the entirety of the play but it goes unnoticed to many readers/watchers. I will pay close attention not only to Rose and Troy's relationship, but the relationship that Rose has with Cory, and how her role in the family would be to stick up to Troy for her son, which would shape her strength and resilience for the rest of the play. By further analyzing Rose’s relationships throughout Fences, we can further understand the decision she makes towards the end of Troy's life, and how she represents not only strength for herself, but strength for women in general.
